INSURANCE COMPANY SETTING AGENDA FOR REPUBLICAN GOVERNORS

COLUMBUS – The Ohio Academy of Trial Lawyers (OATL) recently obtained a document detailing a presentation by MassMutual Financial Group to Republican Governors and about 230 business representatives at a secret meeting hosted by Governor Taft last week.
Dennis Mulvihill, Chair of OATL’s Legislative Committee, stated, “I am outraged that Governor Taft holds secret meetings with the insurance industry and big business to plan their next attack on Ohio’s judicial system. It is appalling that consumers and injured victims were excluded from the meeting which was aimed at undermining legal protections to victims of corporate greed and wrongdoing.”
In documents from the meeting, MassMutual celebrated the fact that it has benefited from recent legal protections and is now targeting eliminating contingency fees.
The Academy is a statewide professional association of lawyers who represent consumers.
